Dominic Claims a GB Seat at the World Championships!

Former Northfield student, Dominic Seri-Curry, has recently been selected to represent Great Britain in the Under 18’c category of Dragon Boat Racing at the World Championships in August which will be held in Thailand.

Dominic left Northfield in July 2018 and as well as gaining successful exam results he also has 5 years of memories and experiences in enjoying school activities. Northfield is a flagship school for The Duke of Edinburgh Award and in Year 10 Dominic was given the opportunity to complete his Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. As part of this award the applicant needs to complete a physical, skill and volunteering sections, as well as a final expedition. Accompanied by Northfield staff, Dominic and other students joined the local Dragon Boat Racing team, Tees Valley Powerhouse Dragons, at The River Tees Watersports Centre. With the help of the team Dominic has thrived in the sport from the beginning and signed up to race in the national league with the Stockton team.

In September 2017, Dominic was given a great opportunity to train with the Great Britain Under 18 coaches and in February 2019, he took part in a weekend of trials for the U18 GB crew and his hard work and determination shone through as he was selected for the team. He will take part in GB training weekends once a month from March until July and continue to compete in National events with his own club Powerhouse from April to September. He trains weekly on and off the River Tees at Stockton Water Sports Centre 2 to 3 times a week with the Powerhouse Crew.

Dominic will travel to Thailand on 12th August to paddle for the Great Britain Under 18 Dragon Boat squad.

The trip will be fully funded by Dominic and his family as there is no government support for GB representatives in this sport, so Dominic is working hard in training and also fundraising to help him raise funds to support this dream. He is also preparing to share his positive experience to motivate our younger students next term, when he will come in to talk to our current students.

If you want to see Dominic in action, Powerhouse are hosting one of the BDA national events at Stockton River Tees Water Sports Centre on Sunday 5th May. You could also sign up for an opportunity of attending future training session with the club if you are interested in getting involved with the sport.

Northfield School are very proud of Dominic’s hard work and determination and are looking forward to seeing him compete for Great Britain. We wish him and team GB every success for The World Championships 2019!
