Northfield Ice Hockey Star!

Ben Greenhalgh, aged 12 and a Year 8 pupil has recently been named in the England U13 Ice Hockey Team who will travel to Bratislava, Slovakia on the  2nd April this year for a five day training camp and a series of competitive games.

Ben was selected as one of six defencemen who along with twelve forwards and three netminders make up the U13 team that will travel to Slovakia along with the England U14 and U15 Boys Teams and England Girls U14 and U17.

England recognition is a fantastic achievement for Ben who first started playing Ice Hockey aged 7.  Ben first trialled for England U13 as an 11 year old in October 2016, but was unsuccessful.  After working hard on his fitness over the last year and a half, success this time around was achieved after a gruelling six day selection process which began in August 2017 and tested not only the boys’ ice hockey and skating skills but also focused on their strength and stamina.

Ben plays Ice Hockey for local club Billingham Stars where he trains three times a week.  Ben’s progress at club level has led him to being selected the last 3 years running for the Northern Conference team that competes against the Midlands, South East and South West England sides, as well as Scotland, at the annual inter conference tournament in Sheffield.   Ben was part of the tournament winning U11 Northern Team in 2016 and from there managed to get onto the radar of the England selection process.

Currently, Ben’s Billingham U13s team are top of the U13 North Division 1 league table with 13 wins from 13 games, while Ben currently has the most goals for a defencemen in the North and South Division 1 leagues and the second highest points total for a defenceman overall.

Ben is one of four Billingham Stars youngsters taking part at U13 level in Bratislava while the Billingham club also have one player at U15, one at U14 girls and two players on the reserve list; a fantastic achievement for the club and recognition for all the hard work the players and coaches have put in over the years.  All of the players are very much looking forward to the forthcoming trip.
