Life Skills

At Northfield School, our Life Skills curriculum helps to provide pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they require to prepare them to play a full and active part in society. Through the Life Skills curriculum pupils develop the knowledge and skills they need to keep themselves healthy, safe and prepared for life and work. The Life Skills curriculum supports pupils in developing the attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and valued members of society. Life Skills also makes a significant contribution to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development.

The curriculum has been carefully constructed using statutory guidance from DFE and the PSHE Association framework and is based around 3 key themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. Tutors deliver the Life Skills curriculum to their own tutor groups allowing pupils the confidence to explore and discuss sensitive issues supported by a trusted adult with a good understanding of their personal context.

The Life Skills curriculum is consistently reviewed and refined with consideration given to local context and risk. It provides pupils with drug education, financial education, relationship and sex education (RSE) and promotes the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle (RSHE).

The Life Skills curriculum is underpinned by our wider programme of personal development and supported by strong links to other curriculum areas. Retention of the critical knowledge developed through the Life Skills curriculum is given value and reinforced in MFT through Throwback Thursday / Flashback Friday.
