Protected Characteristics at Northfield
At Northfield School, pupils' personal development includes the opportunity to develop their understanding of Britain as a diverse and multicultural country and gain a real understanding and appreciation of others, their cultures, traditions, and ways of life. This involves the promotion of equality and diversity through the teaching of protected characteristics as outlined by the 2010 Equality Act which includes.
Equality and diversity are promoted in a variety of ways. Policies and procedures demonstrate that discrimination of any form is not tolerated within our school.
Pupils at Northfield experience an inclusive curriculum. This includes the development of an age-appropriate knowledge and understanding of protected characteristics including sexual orientation and gender reassignment as part of the RSHE curriculum. Pupils also learn about diverse authors, historical figures and perspectives in other areas of the curriculum. Teachers promote protected characteristics by challenging stereotypes in the classroom by addressing unconscious bias or misconceptions. Lessons are also adapted to support all pupils including those with additional needs.
The promotion of equality and diversity through the curriculum is underpinned by our three core values of respect, resilience and honesty. Demonstration of the school’s core values are celebrated through the school rewards system. Diversity is also recognised through our assembly programme. Assemblies recognise events like pride month, religious festivals and Holocaust commemoration. Pupils enjoy equality of access to extra-curricular activities. Inclusive groups such as the GSA and BSL Club celebrate diversity and encourage all pupils to do so.
