Water Safety Awareness at School
At the end of June, our pupils took part in an important Water Safety Assembly focused on the dangers of open water and how to stay safe this summer. With the recent tragedy of the deaths of two men at Seaton Carew, it is a timely reminder to share.
With over 300 accidental drownings in the UK every year, many of them during the warmer months, it's vital that young people understand the risks and know what to do in an emergency.
During the session, students learned about the FLOAT to Live technique from the RNLI:
F – Fight your instinct to swim
L – Lean back and float
O – Open your body and keep calm
A – Angle yourself to safety
T – Take your time, then call for help or swim to safety
Remember: If you are caught in a rip current, don't try to swim directly back to shore against it. Stay calm, Float to Live, then swim parallel to the shore until you are free of the current before making your way back to the beach. If you can't swim to safety, float and signal for help.
